Dar es Salaam

City in Tanzania

Dar es Salaam, a major city and commercial port on Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast, grew from a fishing village. The open-air Village Museum has re-created the traditional homes of local and other Tanzanian tribes and hosts tribal dancing. It’s part of the National Museum, which offers Tanzanian history exhibits, including the fossils of human ancestors found by anthropologist Louis Leakey.
Craftsmen create and sell masks, bone carvings, shields, spears and fabrics, plus Tingatinga-style paintings that utilize saturated colors, at the Mwenge woodcarvers’ market. At the northern end of the harbor is the buzzing Kivukoni fish market and auction where dhows, or sailboats, drop their daily catch. Dhows also cruise to the nearby islands of Bongoyo and Mbudya, whose uninhabited beaches and clear waters are part of the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve. The city’s Kigamboni district offers white-sand beaches on the mainland.
