Four Coasts, Four Different Moods

Where to Go

The Classic Choice

Zanzibar (Unguja)

The island with everything: lively north-coast energy at Nungwi and Kendwa, where you can swim at any tide and the nights don’t slow down; the wind-whipped east coast at Paje and Jambiani, a kitesurfing mecca made for lessons and long barefoot walks; and Matemwe, where the water goes glass-still over Mnemba Atoll and the diving is some of the best on the continent.

Highlights:

Nungwi and Kendwa: best for swimming at all tides and energetic evenings.
Paje and Jambiani: east-coast wind and kite-surfing mecca; great for lessons and long walks.
Matemwe / Mnemba Atoll: top snorkeling and diving; quieter, long beaches.

For Divers and Privacy Seekers

Mafia & Pemba

Mafia Island Marine Park is protected waters and, in season, the chance to swim alongside whale sharks, a bucket-list moment most divers never get. Pemba is greener, wilder, and quieter still: intimate resorts, superb snorkeling, and almost no crowd to share it with.

Quick City Escapes

Dar es Salaam & Nearby Islands

Coco Beach, Kigamboni, Kunduchi, and the marine reserve islands of Bongoyo and Mbudya offer half-day snorkeling and a picnic on white sand within easy reach of the city, perfect if your time is short but the ocean is calling anyway.

Pangani, Bagamoyo, Saadani

Mainland Coast

For travelers who want the road less taken, Pangani and Bagamoyo offer authentic Swahili towns and quiet mangrove estuaries. Saadani goes one step further; it’s the only place in East Africa where you can watch elephants walk the beach at Saadani National Park.
