The HZJ78 is the roomy member of the 70-series family. Its longer body gives more passenger and cargo space than the shorter models, which makes it a good fit for families, groups of friends, or anyone carrying a lot of camping gear. Under the bonnet is a simple, proven 4.2-litre diesel engine with a manual gearbox and part-time 4WD with low range. There’s very little electronics to fail in the bush, and mechanics across Tanzania know how to work on it.
It’s a working safari vehicle, not a luxury SUV. The ride is firm, the A/C is basic and the audio is simple. You’re trading comfort for reliability, and on rough park roads that’s a trade most self-drivers are glad they made.
