Short on time? This compact private safari links Tarangire’s elephant herds and baobabs, the birdlife of Lake Manyara, and the wildlife-packed Ngorongoro Crater, all by 4×4 from Arusha. It is the most popular way to taste Tanzania before returning to the Serengeti.
Classic Tanzania
Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights
Start/End: Arusha
Level: Mid-range lodge and tented camp
Group: Private, 2 to 6 guests
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park (D)
Your driver-guide collects you from your Arusha hotel around 8:00 AM. Drive about 2 hours to Tarangire, famous for large elephant herds, giant baobabs and, in the dry season, concentrations of wildlife along the Tarangire River. Enjoy a picnic lunch and a full afternoon game drive before checking in to Baobab Tented Camp. Dinner and overnight at camp.
Day 2: Tarangire to Lake Manyara and Karatu (B, L, D)
An early morning game drive in Tarangire, then drive to Lake Manyara National Park, known for tree-climbing lions in some seasons, hippo pools, flamingos in the wet months, and a lush groundwater forest. After lunch, continue up the escarpment to Karatu for dinner and overnight at Karatu Tented Lodge.
Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater and return to Arusha (B, L)
Descend early into the Ngorongoro Crater, a 260 sq km caldera with one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, including a good chance of black rhino, lion, hippo, flamingos and huge buffalo herds. Picnic lunch beside the hippo pool. Climb out of the crater mid-afternoon and drive about 3.5 hours back to Arusha, arriving around 6:00 PM.
Highlights: Tarangire elephants and baobabs, Lake Manyara birdlife, Ngorongoro Crater floor, Big Five chances (all but leopard are more likely than not in the crater).
