Marangu is the oldest and most established path to the roof of Africa. It is the only route with sleeping huts, so there are no tents to pitch, and each evening you will find a dry bunk, a dining hall, and a hot meal waiting. The trail climbs gradually from the rainforest, through heath and moorland, to the barren alpine desert below Kibo, and the summit push follows the same logic: steady, patient, rewarding.
Because you ascend and descend on the same trail, you do not see as much variety as on other routes. We therefore recommend the 6-day version, which adds an acclimatisation night at Horombo Hut and noticeably improves your chances of reaching the top.
With Private Explorers, your group climbs alone with your own guide, cook and porters, not alongside strangers.
We meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer you to your hotel. In the evening, your lead guide briefs you on the climb and checks your gear. Rental equipment is available.
Overnight: hotel (bed & breakfast)
After registration at the gate, you walk through lush montane forest, where blue monkeys and colobus monkeys are often seen.
Overnight: Mandara Hut
The forest gives way to open moorland with giant heather, and the views of Mawenzi peak begin to open up.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
You cross the lunar-like “saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo. Have an early dinner and rest before the night ascent.
Overnight: Kibo Hut
You set off around midnight by headlamp, climbing the scree to Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) as the sun rises. After photos, descend to Kibo to rest, then continue to Horombo.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
A final walk down through the forest to the gate, where you receive your summit certificate and transfer to your hotel for a hot shower.
Overnight: hotel
Transfer to JRO, or extend with a safari or Zanzibar.
The Marangu Route is considered moderate and is the easiest Kilimanjaro trek due to its gradual incline and hut accommodations. However, altitude can be challenging, so proper acclimatization is key.
With proper acclimatization and expert guides, the success rate is around 80%-85%. Our experienced team ensures the highest safety and success rates!
Unlike other routes, the Marangu Route offers hut accommodations with beds, mattresses, and communal dining areas. No camping required!
You don’t need technical climbing skills, but good fitness helps. We recommend hiking, cardio exercises, and leg strengthening before the trip.
The best months are January – March and June – October, offering clear skies and excellent conditions.
Our guides are trained to handle altitude sickness. We follow the “climb high, sleep low” method and monitor all climbers closely. If needed, a safe descent will be arranged.
