Tour Details

Marangu is the oldest and most established path to the roof of Africa. It is the only route with sleeping huts, so there are no tents to pitch, and each evening you will find a dry bunk, a dining hall, and a hot meal waiting. The trail climbs gradually from the rainforest, through heath and moorland, to the barren alpine desert below Kibo, and the summit push follows the same logic: steady, patient, rewarding.

Because you ascend and descend on the same trail, you do not see as much variety as on other routes. We therefore recommend the 6-day version, which adds an acclimatisation night at Horombo Hut and noticeably improves your chances of reaching the top.

With Private Explorers, your group climbs alone with your own guide, cook and porters, not alongside strangers.

Who is Marangu for?

  • Trekkers who prefer a bed and a roof over camping
  • Those on a tighter budget
  • Climbers who want the most direct, well-marked path

Good to know

  • Huts have shared bunks, mattresses, and basic facilities; bring a sleeping bag.
  • This is one of the busiest routes in the high season; your private team keeps your pace and meals separate.
  • The shorter 5-day format has a lower summit success rate; choose 6 days if you can.
