The 70-series Land Cruiser is popular on safari for one reason: it keeps going. The HZJ77 uses a simple, proven 4.2-litre diesel engine with a manual gearbox and a part-time 4WD system with low range. There’s very little electronics to fail in the middle of the bush, and almost any mechanic in Tanzania knows how to work on it.
It’s a working safari vehicle, not a luxury SUV. The ride is firm, the A/C is basic and the audio is simple. You’re trading comfort for reliability, and on rough park roads that’s a trade most self-drivers are glad they made.
